When Life Becomes Overwhelming...
What do you do?
I was recently asked this question on a public forum.
I was surprised by all of the different answers. I mean, I shouldn’t be surprised, after all, we are all different.
So I am curious… when life gets to be too much, too overwhelming and you can hardly take a breath, what do you have in your arsenal of self care that helps you to calm down?
My go-to is usually getting outside into nature and breathing deep. What I know is the best for me, is going for a long outdoor run by myself. The funny thing is though, it’s usually the last thing I feel like doing when I feel like I’m barely keeping my head above water. I’m usually exhausted, and feel like burying myself under my blankets in a dark room. And although that is comforting for a few moments, it isn’t what in the end helps me.
Pulling on my running gear, tying my hair back and hitting the pavement outside is what helps to give me perspective. Once out running, the world seems so much bigger than myself.
I see people, I see mountains, I see the big open sky and suddenly I seem so small.
My problems shrink.
I’m also feeling the endorphins kick in. Those happy little responders in our brains that boost our moods. And although I start my run off tired, I’m actually not. My anxiety and stress is energy that needs to be spent. The fresh air deep in my lungs is powerful, and I’m feeling some sense of relief.
A friend once told me to keep running until I know longer feel anxious. I like that.
So how about you? What are your go-to’s when life is too much? I feel like this is important for us to know about ourselves. Let’s take care of ourselves friends:)
much love,
Lara
